MAYOTTE. EPILOGUE / (in Russian below)

We spent 17 months in Mayotte. We discovered this beautiful French department full of contradictions, we plunged, the three of us, into a completely unfamiliar to us island life. And we left it as a family of four. I got to know this place already as a mother, and now I want to sum up my experience of living in Mayotte with children, because their presence changes a lot.

POSITIVE SIDES:

- Water. Mayotte is a young French department, consisting of two islands of amazing beauty. The most beautiful thing here is the lagoon, and all the main pleasures on the island are associated with water activities: boat and catamaran trips, fishing, diving, snorkelling, jet skiing, etc. You can of course leave the children with a nanny or you can also take them with you. Depending on their age, however, either way all this entertainment is limited to some extent.

- Nature. There is much less entertainment on earth, but for nature-lovers there are naturalist clubs that organize walks in the forests of Mayotte. There are also several well-known hiking routes that are easy to do without a guide, but you’d still better embark on them in company of several other people for safety reasons. The climate is also quite pleasant: you can enjoy the sun all year round and the rains do not last long during the rainy season. The island itself is flamboyant green and expels the intoxicating aroma of ylang-ylang and bougainvillea.

- The size. As for the size, it's not everybody’s cup of tea, but I personally discovered for myself a lot of positive sides in life in a small town: everything is close! And even if there are traffic jams in Mamoudzou, you will get from point A to point B in a maximum of one hour, but, as a rule, in 10-20 minutes.

- Friends. Since everyone is in the same situation and no one has any relatives or friends in Mayotte, you make friends very quickly. With these people you work, go to the beach, throw parties, raise children - in short, you live together. Very quickly they grow from acquaintances into close friends.

- Children. For children, this small island is a whole world where the weekend means playing on the beach and swimming in the eternally warm sea, where you can get dressed in 2 minutes and where lemurs walk in the garden. Here children learn to communicate with another race, with representatives of another religion, learn to hear another language - they simply get used to the "other". I strongly believe that if all the children of the world were not afraid of the new, then there would be much less conflict in our world.

NOW THE DISADVANTAGES:

- Security issues. We personally never had any problems in Mayotte, but we know some people who have had clashes with local hooligans. As a rule, these are people who were on the road at a time when hooligans threw stones at passers-by or set up barricades on the road in order to steal. Not very pleasant of course, but it happens as a rule only in the evening or at night and in certain areas where it is better not to meddle. As for the rest, safety on the island is a matter of common sense: do not walk with a phone in your hands or into dangerous areas in gold and diamonds, it is also advisable to carry a bag over your shoulder. The rest depends on your luck.

- Distance and prices for air tickets. Mayotte is far away. It’s okay when you have a family in Paris and you don’t have to somewhere else by train and car. In our case coming home - to Grenoble and Moscow with two children - is a whole adventure and not an easy organization. In addition, the Chef's company paid us for the plane tickets once a year. Otherwise, we are talking about approximately 1000 euros per person for a round trip (direct flight to Paris). It is also very expensive to fly to other places in the area (Madagascar, Reunion, Tanzania, Mauritius) and there is no other means of transport. The reason for this situation is the monopoly of Air Austral on the island. It alone has a fleet of suitable aircraft and trained personnel capable of operating on a very short runway. There is a project to extend this strip and to reconstruct the airport but considering that the island is gradually sinking into the water, this project is technically very complex and expensive, which is why so far everything remains unchanged.

- Lack of communication with family and friends. It is actually a general problem of any expat. Long distance is, first and foremost, the problem of being far from the people we love. Local friends will not replace your grandparents, and those, in turn, will not necessarily be able to travel so far. Hence another problem: except for yourself and, in rare cases, for a nanny, you have no one to rely on with your children.

- Heavy traffic. Mayotte has only one two-lane main road that runs along the perimeter of the island. As a result, from north to south and back, you can only commute by it. Hence, traffic jams.

- Little choice and high prices. Mayotte is an island, and it is not well developed, which means that everything gets here by air or sea. The Mahorans are not the most enterprising people, and they produce little here. Agriculture is also not developed. The logical consequence of this problem is that everything costs a lot of money and there is very little choice. Here you have to get used to the consumption of frozen and canned food and to the fact that shopping happens in the mainland France once or twice a year. There are few good restaurants, even fewer bars, and no cinemas, theatres or museums (except for one).

- Complete lack of entertainment for children. Not that they needed a lot to be happy, but the presence of parks, playgrounds, merry-go-rounds or children's clubs would not be superfluous. Then another question - for whom? There are a lot of children in Mayotte (more than 50% of the population), but these children need food a lot more than parks.

- Education. The low level of education is a problem for children starting from secondary school (about 11 years old). There are many children, few places, classrooms are overcrowded, and there are not enough qualified teachers. Children here have no ambitions and very little opportunity to succeed. There are private schools as well where the level of education is higher, but they still cannot be compared to those of the mainland France

- Health. It is better not to seriously fall ill here, but for minor issues you can easily go to the local doctor. As for children, there are no paediatricians’ offices here, you need to contact a general therapist, but they are quite good at coping with kids’ diseases.

To summarize, I think that Mayotte can be very good if three conditions are met:

1. You have a nice home where you feel comfortable. Due to the very small choice of entertainment, you will spend a lot, a lot of time at home.

2. You have found yourself a good group of friends. It is with these people that you will spend most of your time.

3. You have a well-paid job that allows you to leave the island from time to time and to change the scenery.

If you feel good with the people around you and you comfortable at home with your family, then all the disadvantages of Mayotte are easily tolerated. If a simple life without glamor and glitz, without cultural aspects, but with nature and sports diversity suits you, then you will like it here. If you love the sea, the underwater world and are not afraid of adventure, then you will be as happy here as we were. We left Mayotte with heavy hearts and it was not our choice. This experience was a huge discovery for us - thanks to it, we got to know that we can be happy together on the other side of the world and leave behind the comfort of a big city.

МАЙОТТА. ЭПИЛОГ

Мы провели на Майотте 17 месяцев. Мы открыли для себя этот красивый департамент Франции, полный противоречий, окунувшись в совершенно незнакомую нам островную жизнь, втроём. Мы уехали отсюда вчетвером. Я познакомилась с этим местом, уже будучи мамой, и хочу сейчас подвести итог о моем опыте жизни на Майотте с детьми, потому что их наличие меняет очень многое.

ПОЛОЖИТЕЛЬНЫЕ СТОРОНЫ:

- Вода. Майотта - это молодой департамент Франции, состоящий из двух островов удивительной красоты. Самое прекрасное здесь - это лагуна, и все основные удовольствия на острове связаны с водными развлечениями: прогулки на лодке, на катамаране, рыбалка, дайвинг, сноркелинг, джет-ски и т.д. Можно, конечно, оставить детей с няней, но можно и брать их с собой. В зависимости от их возраста, все эти развлечения так или иначе лимитированы.

- Природа. На земле развлечений намного меньше, но для любителей природы есть клубы натуралистов, которые организовывают пешие прогулки по лесам Майотты. Есть и несколько известных пеших маршрутов, которые легко реализовать без гида, но нужно это все же делать в компании в целях безопасности. Климат тоже довольно приятный: круглый год солнце и дожди в сезон дождей краткосрочны. Сам остров утопает в зелени и пьянит ароматом иланг-иланга и буганвиллия.

- Размер. Что касается размера, здесь на любителя, но я лично для себя открыла массу прелестей жизни в маленьком городе: все близко! И даже если в Мамудзу пробки, из точки А в точку Б вы доберётесь максимум за час, но, как правило, за минут 10-20.

- Друзья. Поскольку все в одинаковом положении и родственников-друзей на Майотте нет ни у кого, компания здесь складывается очень быстро. С этими людьми вы работаете, ездите на пляж, устраиваете вечеринки, воспитываете детей - в общем, живёте изо дня в день. Очень быстро из знакомых они перерастают в родных людей.

- Дети. Для детей этот маленький остров - это целый мир, где выходные - это игры на пляже и купание в вечно теплом море, где одеться можно за 2 минуты и где по саду гуляют лемуры. Здесь дети учатся общаться с другой расой, с представителями другой религии, учатся слышать другой язык - попросту привыкают к "другому". Если все дети мира не будут бояться нового, то в нашем мире будет намного меньше конфликтов.

ТЕПЕРЬ НЕДОСТАТКИ:

- Проблемы безопасности. У нас лично проблем здесь никогда не было, но мы знаем некоторых, у которых были столкновения с местными хулиганами. Как правило, это люди, которые оказались на дороге в то время, когда хулиганы бросались камнями в проезжающих или устраивали барикады на дороге в целях воровства. Приятного мало, конечно, но бывает это, как правило, только в позднее время и в определенных районах, в которые лучше не соваться. В остальном безопасность на острове - это дело здравого смысла: с телефоном в руках не ходить, сумку носить желательно через плечо и по опасным районам в золоте-брильянтах не расхаживать. А дальше - как повезет.

- Расстояние и цены на авиа билеты. Майотта - это далеко. Ещё ладно, когда у вас семья в Париже и вам оттуда не надо ещё далеко куда-то ехать на поездах и машинах. В нашем случае, приезд домой - в Гренобль и Москву с двумя детьми - это целая авантюра и нелёгкая организация. К тому же, нам компания Шефа раз в год оплачивала билеты на самолёт. Иначе речь идёт примерно о 1000 евро на человека туда-обратно (прямой рейс до Парижа). До других мест в округе (Мадагаскар, Реюньон, Танзания, Маврикий) лететь тоже очень дорого и другого вида транспорта нет. Причина этой ситуации - это монополия компании Air Austral на острове. Только она имеет флот подходящих самолётов и обученный персонал, способный оперировать на очень короткой взлетной полосе. Существует проект продления этой полосы и реконструкции аэропорта, но если учесть, что остров постепенно проваливается под воду, то этот проект технически очень сложный и дорогостоящий, так что пока все остаётся без изменений.

- Недостаток общения с семьёй и друзьями. Это, скорее, проблема в целом жизни в экспатриации. Проблема расстояния - это в первую очередь проблема близости к людям, которых мы любим. Местные друзья не заменят вам бабушек и дедушек, а те, в свою очередь, не факт, что смогут приехать так далеко. Отсюда ещё одна проблема: кроме как на себя самих и в редких случаях на няню, вам рассчитывать с детьми не на кого.

- Пробки. На Майотте только одна двухполосная основная дорога, которая идёт по периметру острова. Соответственно, с севера на юг и обратно можно попасть только по ней. Отсюда вытекают пробки.

- Мало выбора и высокие цены. Майотта - это остров, причем не развитый, а значит, все сюда попадает по воздуху или по морю. Махорцы - не самый предприимчивый народ, и производят здесь мало что. Сельское хозяйство тоже не развито. Логическое последствие этой проблемы - всё стоит больших денег и выбора очень мало. Во всем. Здесь надо привыкнуть к потреблению замороженных продуктов и консервов и к тому, что шопинг - это в Метрополии раз или 2 в год. Здесь мало хороших ресторанов, ещё меньше баров, и совсем отсутствуют кинотеатры, театры и музеи (кроме одного).

- Полное отсутствие развлечений для детей. Не то, чтобы им очень многое было нужно для счастья, но наличие парков, площадок, каруселей или детских клубов было бы не лишним. Опять же - для кого? Детей здесь масса (больше 50% населения), но этим детям нечего есть, поэтому о парках речь не идёт.

- Образование. Низкий уровень образования является проблемой для детей, начиная от средней школы (примерно 11 лет). Детей много, мест мало, классы переполнены, квалифицированных учителей не хватает. У детей нет амбиций и очень мало возможности выбраться "в люди". Здесь есть частные школы, где уровень образования повыше, но с Метрополией все равно не сравнить.

- Здоровье. Серьезно здесь лучше не болеть, но по мелким вопросам можно спокойно идти к местному врачу. Что касается детей, кабинетов педиатров здесь нет, надо обращаться к терапевту, но они вполне себе хорошо справляются с детскими болячками.

Если подвести итог, то мне кажется, на Майотте может быть очень хорошо, если удовлетворены три условия:

1. У вас хороший дом, в котором вам комфортно. Из-за очень маленького выбора развлечений, вы будете много-много времени проводить у себя.

2. Вы нашли себе хорошую компанию друзей. Именно с этими людьми вы будете проводить большую часть своего времени.

3. У вас есть высоко оплачиваемая работа, которая позволяет вам периодически уезжать с острова и менять картинку.

Если вам хорошо с людьми, которые вас окружают, и вам комфортно дома с вашей семьей, то все недостатки Майотты переносятся легко. Если простая жизнь без шика и блеска, без культурных изысков, но с природным и спортивным разнообразием вас устраивает, то вам здесь понравится. Если вы любите море, подводный мир и не боитесь приключений, то вы здесь будете так же счастливы, как и мы. Мы уехали с Майотты с болью в душе, это был не наш выбор, а стечение обстоятельств. Этот опыт был для нас огромным открытием – благодаря ему, мы узнали, что можем быть счастливы вместе на другом конце света и отказавшись от многих благ жизни в большом городе.
